How Many Tanks does Canada Have?
Canada currently possesses approximately 100 main battle tanks, primarily the Leopard 2A4 and Leopard 2A6 models, as of my last update in August 2023. This number can vary due to factors such as maintenance upgrades and operational readiness. For the most current figures, it is best to consult official Canadian Armed Forces reports or defense publications.
Current Tank Inventory
As per the latest data, Canada has 20 Leopard 2A6 tanks obtained from the Netherlands. These tanks underwent upgrades in 2007 to the 2A6M standard, which then brought them to a level similar to the Leopard 2A7. The Canadians further upgraded these tanks to the 2A6M CAN standard, providing them with mine protection belly armor, a cooling unit, and even cooling suits for the crews. These tanks are highly suitable for hostile environments.
Besides the 20 Leopard 2A6 tanks, Canada has acquired a total of 80 Leopard 2A4 tanks from the Netherlands. Twenty of these were upgraded into the 2A4M CAN standard, which included extra belly armor for mine protection. While these tanks are highly capable, the majority of the non-upgraded tanks are used as supporting vehicles.
It is worth noting that Canada:
Has approximately 80 Leopard 2 tanks that were purchased from the Dutch and upgraded. Has one mechanized brigade within their single active division. The rest of the rolling armored stock consists of tracked or wheeled infantry fighting or reconnaissance vehicles and personnel carriers. Still has a number of older Leopard 1 tanks in storage. These could potentially be reactivated if needed.Supplementary Information

In conclusion, Canada's main battle tank inventory is centered around the Leopard 2A4 and 2A6 models. These tanks form a significant part of their armored forces, enhancing their ability to maintain an armored battalion and a training unit. Whether it's for active service or potential reactivation, Canada's tank fleet is a vital component of its defense capabilities.
