Introduction
When I first heard about the Tesla Model 3, I was skeptical. In this article, I will share my journey with this vehicle, from an initial negative impression to becoming a passionate defender of the Model 3. I will also provide a balanced review of my experiences, including comparisons with other vehicles and personal anecdotes.
Initial Impressions: Poor Quality and Disappointment
When I mentioned to my partner that we should test drive a Tesla Model 3, my first impression was one of doubt. My original thoughts were that the car was a pile of junk with poor quality control and fit/finish. The high noise levels at high speeds, coupled with the cramped cabin, made me doubt the car's suitability for taller individuals.
Adding to this, the infotainment system was frustrating. The single-display setup was overly distracting, especially when driving, and there was no traditional speedometer and gauge cluster behind the wheel. Moreover, the navigation and touchscreen experience felt slow and unresponsive.
Concession to Reality: Forcing the Sell
In 2019, when the tax incentives for purchasing Teslas were about to expire, I decided to test drive the Model 3 during a trip from Georgia to Oregon. Although the car initially met our expectations, the loaner Tesla I borrowed for a short test drive in north Georgia surpassed our hopes and expectations. This experience solidified my decision to place the order for the Model 3.
I went ahead and placed the order, using my 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid and a 2017 Chevy Bolt as my trade-ins. The Tesla promised delivery by December 31, just as the tax credits were to expire, and they indeed delivered my 2020 Model 3 Long-range at the end of December.
Rainy Day in Paradise: Constant Service
Over the past four years and more than 80,000 miles, my Tesla Model 3 has consistently exceeded my expectations. There have been no mechanical issues or significant problems. The only notable issue was during the pandemic in 2020 when a part needed to be replaced, but this was quickly resolved with remote assistance from Tesla. This episode left me questioning what could make any other car better than the Model 3.
A Long-Lasting Relationship
One of the features I appreciate most about the Model 3 is its battery life. I have never experienced any charging challenges, even with long road trips. This has been a reliable companion for our annual visits to the Pacific Northwest. The car's performance and reliability have become a testament to the brand's commitment to quality and innovation.
The Future with Tesla
Considering Tesla's promise of the car lasting up to a million miles, if I were to have another vehicle, I would undoubtedly choose another Tesla. The Model 3's reliability, performance, and overall experience have reinforced my belief in the brand.
This year, my daughter and son-in-law decided to get their first Tesla, and I can confidently recommend this vehicle to anyone seeking a reliable, high-performance electric car. If you're in the market for an environmentally-friendly vehicle, look no further than the Tesla Model 3.
