Is It Safe to Bike During a Coronavirus Outbreak?
Any possibility, no matter how remote, exists. However, it is extremely unlikely that you would contract the coronavirus while cycling, as long as you follow the necessary precautions.
Biking in Fresh Air
Cycling in fresh air poses no problem. Gloves are unnecessary unless your hands sweat a lot, in which case, bike gloves can be used. A mask is your option but not mandatory. The most critical element remains maintaining a safe distance from others.
Exposure Risks
Just stepping out of your front door places you at risk. However, if you take all the necessary precautions, your chance of contracting the virus is extremely slim. The risk of being knocked off your bike due to an accident or collision is higher than contracting the virus.
Face Masks and Protection
The primary risk comes from touching the face mask if it's contaminated. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap without touching your face. Ensure the mask is disinfected before reuse. However, the chances of the mask becoming contaminated while cycling, especially when keeping a safe distance, are very low.
Outdoors Safety and Hand Hygiene
You can bike outdoors to your heart's content, as long as you do not come into close contact with anyone. No additional protection is required unless you are in a large urban city facing severe air pollution. Enjoy the ride!
It is always possible to contract the virus through other means, such as touching contaminated surfaces, which can harbor the virus on your clothing and skin. At some point, you will likely come into contact with the virus. There is currently no real way to completely avoid that possibility.
A vaccine is developing and will take several months to become available for public distribution. Even then, it may take 60-80% of the population being vaccinated or having natural immunity before herd immunity sets in, estimated to be well over a year or so.
Precautions for Cycling
Do not wear gloves as they can hinder proper hand hygiene practices. If you do wear a mask, remember that it is primarily meant to protect others from you, not the other way around. As long as you maintain a distance of at least 10 meters (around 30 feet) from others, you should be safe.
Enjoy your ride and stay safe!
