The Forgotten Love for Mathematics

The Forgotten Love for Mathematics

Mathematics has often been a source of wonder and discovery, yet its importance is often overlooked. We often reflect on the things we wish to return to, and for me, one such thing is my cherished love for Mathematics. Reflecting on my journey, I realize the profound impact that one teacher had on my academic interests.

The Decline of My Mathematical Affection

For seven years, from the age of 7 to 15, Mathematics was my favorite subject. It was a world full of logic, puzzles, and solutions that captivated my young mind. However, at the age of 16, everything changed. One incident left a lasting impression on me, a teacher who replaced my favorite teacher.

The new teacher, full of arrogance and a lack of empathy, prioritized bullying and punishment over teaching. He humiliated students for minor mistakes and constantly compared us to other classes, thereby fostering resentment among the students. This negative atmosphere, which persists to this day, pushed me and my classmates away from Mathematics. What a sad turn of events!

The Lasting Impact

The impact of this experience on my academic life has been profound. Before, in Primary School and the early days of High School, I consistently excelled in Mathematics. My grades were excellent, and the subject was a source of pride. Unfortunately, this all changed.

Now, maintaining my Mathematics knowledge is a struggle. Simple tasks like calculating bills, expenses, and managing finances become daunting challenges. I find myself frequently referring to references and tutorials just to perform basic calculations.

Addressing the Importance of Quality Education

This experience highlights the critical role that teachers play in shaping the minds and attitudes of students. A negative or poorly conducted classroom environment not only affects the immediate wellbeing and morale of students but also has lasting impacts on their academic pursuits and future career paths.

It is imperative for educators to foster a positive learning environment where students feel supported, encouraged, and valued. Teachers should focus on understanding and respecting the diverse needs and abilities of their students, rather than resorting to punitive measures.

The power of education is immense. Teachers who inspire and motivate students can change lives for the better. On the other hand, those who intimidate and belittle students can leave long-lasting scars that are difficult to heal.

Conclusion

Reflecting on the past and the challenges I face today, I wish there was a way to return to my earlier passion for Mathematics. It serves as a reminder of the importance of quality education and the profound impact that a single teacher can have.

It is vital for educators to prioritize positivity, support, and respect in the classroom. Students who feel valued and inspired are more likely to succeed and develop a lifelong love for learning, just like I once did for Mathematics.
