What Car Feature Did You Consider a Gimmick Until You Had It?
When it comes to car features, many of them can seem like mere gimmicks, especially if you're unsure of their practicality or necessity. Over time, however, these features often prove their worth, enhancing driving convenience and safety. In this article, we will explore some car features that I initially considered to be merely for the rich and luxurious, only to realize how indispensable they are now. Let's dive into a few of these examples and discuss the benefits they bring.
Heated Mirrors
When I first encountered heated mirrors, I viewed them as an unnecessary luxury, mainly featured in more expensive models. However, having experienced them in colder months, I can confidently say that they were quite the revelation. The ability to clear ice and condensation without the need for manual wiping makes driving in snowy or foggy conditions significantly easier and safer. Imagine driving through a snowstorm with a clear view of your surroundings and without the hassle of constantly defogging your mirrors. That was the exact experience I had, and it made all the difference.
Heated Seats
A similar conclusion applies to heated seats. At first, I treated them as a luxury feature found on high-end cars, thinking that they were an added cost without substantial benefits. Little did I know, the comfort and convenience they provided in cold weather could be the deciding factor in choosing a car model. In winter, having heated seats ensures that you start your day warm and comfortable, which is especially important if your garage has limited insulation. As you can imagine, these features enhance your driving experience, making it less cold and dreary, and more enjoyable.
Reverse Cameras
For years, I managed my reverse maneuvers with ease without the aid of a reverse camera. Nonetheless, the most recent two vehicles I’ve had are equipped with them, and I can now say that their benefits are unmatched. Gone are the days of peering over one shoulder while backing up, where it's impossible to see everything at once. The reverse camera provides a clear, real-time view of what's behind your vehicle, making reversing much safer and more stress-free. This feature is a godsend, especially in tight spaces or when towing a trailer.
GPS Navigation (SATNAV)
Initially, GPS navigation was another feature I dismissed as unnecessary, assuming it was just a luxury for those who could afford the technology. However, the inclusion of built-in GPS in my infotainment system has completely changed my mind. This feature, often found in newer models of cars, has eliminated the need for paper maps or external GPS devices. While apps like Google Maps can be useful, using the built-in GPS system is more integrated and convenient. The system suggests routes that match your driving habits, and you can even receive alerts about speed cameras and adjust your speed accordingly. It's a game-changer, especially for navigating unfamiliar areas or cities with complex road networks.
Tilt/Tilte and Telescopic Steering Wheel
Another feature that once seemed like a luxury is the tilt and telescopic steering wheel. At first, I was skeptical, thinking that manual adjustments would be sufficient. Today, I cannot imagine driving without this feature. A properly adjustable steering wheel can significantly enhance driving comfort, especially for those with different body types or for drivers who need to switch between long and short-term use. Having a steering wheel that can be adjusted in both tilt and telescopic directions ensures that the driver is in the best possible position, reducing fatigue and improving control over the vehicle.
Heated Side Mirrors and Rear View Camera
Heated side mirrors were another feature I thought was just a gimmick, but the experience of driving a car with them in a snowy day made me a believer. The mirrors became nearly invisible when frozen, making it challenging to see the surroundings. The heated side mirrors solved this problem by keeping them clear and visible. Additionally, the rear view cameras that turn with the steering wheel are another indispensable feature I had wished was available earlier. These cameras provide a clear view of your path when reversing, ensuring that you can back up safely and confidently.
Android Auto / Apple Car Play
Lastly, Android Auto and Apple Car Play were once considered just a few extra features, adding convenience to the infotainment system. However, after using this feature, I found it to be incredibly useful. It simplifies the process of accessing navigation, music, and contact information without physically handling your smartphone. While there are some minor glitches and it's not advisable to use it extensively while driving, if you have a smartphone, this feature is worth implementing. It provides an integrated system for navigation, ensuring that you can get an accurate route without needing a separate GPS device. Additionally, it offers features like hands-free calls and updates on speed traps, enhancing your driving safety and comfort.
Overall, many car features that once seemed like unnecessary luxuries or gimmicks have become essential tools for a safer and more convenient driving experience. These features, such as heated mirrors, reverse cameras, heated seats, GPS, tilt/tilte and telescopic steering wheels, and built-in navigation systems, have added substantial value to my daily commute and have significantly improved my overall driving experience.
